Is a Master’s Degree in Marketing Worth It?

It really depends on what you want to do in Marketing. What kind of career do you want to have and where do you want to work? Those are the main questions you need to ask yourself.

Luckily, I waited and worked almost 8 years before choosing to go for a Master’s. I wasn’t sure I really wanted to spend the money on it. I won’t justify my decision by saying that it was worth the money.

I wouldn’t say a Master’s Degree is necessary though. However, I don’t regret my decision in going for it.

The advantage that I had was that it helped my marketing knowledge be more structured to what corporate companies look for.

Being self-employed or owning a business, you don’t need a degree in marketing. You can find great jobs with digital certifications in marketing. Additionally, marketing is not a field you can stop learning in either.

Before I had an idea of what I wanted to do, I had an undergraduate degree in History.

I decided to go for my Master’s in Marketing during my first two years of being a marketing manager because I noticed that, while I did have expertise in most areas of marketing, I did not have a structured way of putting my thoughts together.

I chose to get certifications to build myself up before going for my Masters’s in Marketing. While I did have the skills to be a marketer and was pretty good at it, what I noticed was the lack of attention my resume received because I did not have the credentials employers were looking for.

If you want to work for someone else, this is a good option for you.

If you don’t plan on working for anyone else, you can stop right here. You don’t need a Master’s in Marketing to be successful.

Unfortunately, credentials still matter in the corporate America world. You can be the best marketer in the world, yet chances are your resume will be overlooked if you don’t have both experience and credentials to back up your knowledge.

A portfolio can only get you so far.

A Masters in Marketing Gives You Structure

Whether you are an employee or a manager, a Master’s in Marketing gives you structure. You learn from the best companies. Furthermore, I had access to top-level professors who were in the industry.

In a way, they were like mentors who provided me with insight into how they managed their careers in marketing.

I was able to carry what I learned and apply it to my everyday work. People noticed immediately how my management style changed. My reports were better formatted and my expertise wasn’t questioned.

Unlike an MBA, You’ll Be an Expert at Marketing

This is a question I received often from my team especially interns. Should I get an MBA or a Master’s in Marketing? I told them it depends on what you want to do.

Do you want to focus more on the business side of the marketing side? What I realized is business and marketing go hand in hand. It just depends on what you see yourself being more focused on. I chose Marketing instead.

Unlike an MBA, a Master’s in Marketing will give you an edge in the marketing world especially if you don’t plan to start your business. You’ll be an ace in marketing if you can apply what you learn. It was a close decision for me.

Since I wasn’t focused on building a business, I went for a Master’s in Marketing because I was eager to be the best I could be for my staff and my company.

Eventually, I considered the option of creating my own marketing agency.

The Resources You Gain are Valuable

The resources you gain from a Master’s Degree are valuable. If you don’t have access to a mentor or you don’t necessarily like YouTube videos, it may be an option for you.

After completing my degree, I have access to a library of different articles and can receive updates on the latest trends. My career choice relied on me being able to organize my thoughts that were structured.

Admittedly, my interns and staff were more appreciative of my knowledge after I had a Master’s under my belt.

Your decision for going for a Master’s in Marketing should be dependent on where you see yourself in the future.

Was it worth it? For me, it definitely was. It may not be the same for other people though.
